The good news is that with the right guidance, it becomes much easier to recognize your baby’s needs and feel confident in your feeding journey.

How Much Milk Does My Baby Need?

Every baby is unique, but here are general guidelines:

Breastfed Babies

  • 0–1 month: Every 2–3 hours (8–12 feeds/day)
  • 1–3 months: Every 2–4 hours
  • 3–6 months: Every 3–4 hours

Daily intake: around 700–900 ml Per feed: approximately 60–120 ml

Formula-Fed Babies

  • 0–1 month: 45–90 ml every 2–3 hours
  • 1–3 months: 90–150 ml every 3–4 hours
  • 3–6 months: 120–180 ml every 3–4 hours

General guide: about 150 ml per kg per day

Signs Your Baby Is Hungry

  • Turning their head (rooting) looking for the breast or bottle
  • Sucking on hands or fingers
  • Opening mouth and making sucking motions
  • Becoming more alert or restless
  • Crying is a late sign of hunger

Signs Your Baby Is Full

  • Turning head away
  • Slowing down or stopping sucking
  • Pushing the bottle away or closing their mouth
  • Appearing calm, relaxed, or sleepy
  • Letting go of the nipple naturally
  • Becoming distracted or playful

How Can I Be Sure My Baby Is Getting Enough?

  • 6–8 wet diapers per day
  • Steady weight gain
  • A baby who is generally content and settled According to the World Health Organization, responsive feeding—following your baby’s hunger and fullness cues—is more important than strictly measuring exact amounts.
